Developing a Framework for Selecting the Right Pediatrician

Hello everyone,

I was hoping to gather some real-world perspectives on a task my husband, Mark, and I are currently tackling. I’m a first-time mom, currently 24 weeks along, and we’re trying to get a head start on choosing a pediatrician to feel more prepared for baby’s arrival.

So far, my research has involved the usual steps: compiling a list of in-network providers, reading online reviews, and checking clinic websites for basic information like vaccination policies and office hours. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has some good general guidance, but it feels very high-level. What I’m looking for are the more nuanced questions that you only realize are important once you’re actually in the thick of early parenthood.

For those of you who have been through this process, what questions did you ask during your ‘meet and greet’ that proved to be truly insightful? Specifically, how did you gauge a doctor’s communication style or their philosophy on topics that might not have a single ‘right’ answer (e.g., approaches to feeding, sleep, or developmental concerns)? My background is in education, so I’m particularly interested in finding a provider who is a clear communicator and can explain the ‘why’ behind their recommendations, not just the ‘what’.

We’re hoping to find a partner in our child’s health, not just a practitioner. Any advice on what to look for, or red flags to watch out for, would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you!
