SAHMs: How Do You Keep Professional Skills Sharp for the Future?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to connect with other stay-at-home parents who might be having similar thoughts. I’ve been a SAHM since my son, who is now 8, was born, and I also have a 4-year-old daughter. I truly wouldn’t trade this time for anything. Before having children, I completed a diploma in Business Administration, and my partner and I decided this was the best path for our family.

Lately, especially as my youngest is getting more independent, I’ve been thinking more about the future and the possibility of re-entering the workforce in a few years. My concern is that my professional skills are becoming outdated. While I’m pretty tech-savvy when it comes to managing our family’s schedule, budget, and researching school projects, I worry that doesn’t translate to a resume in 2025. The tools and software I learned in college feel like ancient history now!

I was wondering if anyone else in a similar position has found practical ways to keep their skills current? I’ve looked into some online certificates, but it’s a bit overwhelming to know where to start. Have any of you found success with part-time volunteering, specific online courses, or even small freelance projects that you can manage around the kids’ schedules? I’d be very grateful to hear about your experiences or any resources you’ve found helpful for bridging that gap.
